DAYTRIP FROM LONDON TO CAMBRIDGE

Travelling with T for work is always a bittersweet feeling. I get to explore new places, and it usually goes hand in hand with an upcoming holiday that we’ve added on to save on airfare. The downside is while he’s working and I’m out sightseeing and photographing, I’m alone, and I miss sharing the experience with him.

This was the same with Cambridge. I end up doing a lot less cause I would rather not do it at all than do it without T. Although I skip the major attractions, I still always manage to see quite a bit.

I knew I wanted to venture out of London a bit and the decision was between Cambridge and Cotswolds. After a quick video call with my sister, she made the decision for me. Cambridge, here I come.

Cambridge

The only thing I’ve ever heard about Cambridge is the University. Granted, that’s the biggest part of it, but what was unknown to me was the other colleges and campuses and how the entire city is a student hub. There are loads of bicycles. I haven’t been to Netherlands yet, but it felt like the bicycle-to-people ratio should be on par with Netherlands.

Cambridge had a certain poetic charm to it. It’s such an old city, occupied by mostly young people.

Sweet Stores

One of the things that stood out for me was the sweet stores. From a classic sweet store with the class jars to a Chelsea bun specialist, and my favourite, a fudge store.

Since fudge is one of T’s soft spots, I had to get him some. This had to have been some of the best fudge I have tasted. Although there are many flavours to choose from, the classics stay the best. Later in our trip, we would go on a hunt for some more fudge. Not only for more fudge but also so I could let T get that smell when walking into the store.

Universities and Colleges

The University of Cambridge offers a guided tour, but this was one of the things I held off on, so I could one day experience it with T. Although I did not do the guided tour, the University is so big that I could still see a fair amount of architecture from the outside.

As mentioned earlier, there are also quite a few colleges. What amazed me the most was their willingness for you to enter and have a look (as long as you stayed off their grass, of course). Christ’s College even let me wander around their grounds and take photos to my heart’s content. The gardens and buildings are something out of a romantic novel, and the grounds are serene with birdsong and squirrels foraging.

I adored my few hours in Cambridge and vowed to go back with T. Ideally I would like us to spend a night or two there with so many photo opportunities for early morning and late afternoon.

T is at last wrapping up his work responsibilities. In our next post, we’ll be heading to Scotland.

Wandering off now…
